If you're looking for a bit of inspiration this week to get you out and about, here's our pick of the best from our what's on calendar.
Wow, December has arrived and the theme is very much Christmas. There's lots of festive fun to choose from in our calendar but don't forget to book your Santa's grotto as well if you haven't done so already.
The weekend starts here ...
The Lightbox Christmas Fair takes place on Saturday and Sunday, where there will be stalls featuring local artists and creators. Maybury School will be singing Christmas carols and tunes on the Saturday and the wonderful Wey Community Gospel Choir will be performing on the Sunday, filling The Lightbox with Christmas classics while you shop.
It’s Celtic Christmas weekend at Watts Gallery, where you can take part in a variety of crafts including decorating a terracotta reindeer, making a miniature Christmas tree, creating a set of mini crackers and more.
On Sunday the whole family can enjoy some free Christmas crafts at Honeywood Museum. Drop in to make Victorian Christmas cards and tree decorations to take home and to follow the Christmas Trail.
The Make Space is open at WattsGallery as usual on Sunday, so pop along to try out some different arts and crafts ideas.
Take part in a Christmas trail at Hatchlands Park - pick up a trail sheet from reception and follow a musical Christmas story through the parkland and woodland.
All That Glitters at Polesden Lacey includes a woodland trail, horse-drawn carriage, Santa's Grotto and more. Mrs Greville's sumptuous party house has also been re-imagined to focus on jewels and sparkle.
Help Rudolf Shine at Squire's Garden Centres is a a spectacular new circus show running until Christmas Eve in a Big Top in the grounds of the Badshot Lea, Shepperton, Stanmore and Washington centres. A flamboyant Ringmaster hosts the circus and is ‘helped’ by a very funny clown. Entertainment for all the family.
The outdoor ice skating rink is now open at Hampton Court for seven weeks. Glide (or stumble) across the ice with the historic Tudor palace in the background - sounds magical.
Decorate the Claremont tree with a Christmas wish. Draw a festive design, share your hopes for 2020, or remember someone who can’t be with you. Normal admission applies, plus a small donation for the wish tag.
The rest of the week
On Tuesday there is some storytelling for the under-fives at The Lightbox Museum in Woking. Join in with some stories, rhymes and hands-on creative fun either in the studio or around the gallery.This event is free but spaces are limited and will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis at reception from 10.30am on the day.
There's Toddler Time at Rydes Hill Prep on Wednesday. This is a free event for children aged 18 months to three years abut you should book your place in advance.
The Surrey Youth Theatre Christmas Show takes place at Cranleigh Arts Centre on Wednesday evening. Everything you see on stage will be devised and performed by the students of the youth theatre. The show promises to be 30 minutes of rollercoaster emotions.
Little ones can enjoy storytime with Mother Christmas on Thursday and Friday morning at Morden Hall Park. This is a festive fun storytelling session taking place in the stable yard exhibition space.
Wrap up warm on Thursday and head to o Wild Tots at Nower Wood to take part in a variety of activities based around the woodland. Activities might include crafts, stories, games, musical instruments, forest exploration, a mud kitchen or hunting for mini-beasts.
Museum Monkeys takes place at Chertsey Museum on Friday morning. This session invites under-fives to join Charlie the Chimp for some singing, stories and crafts. Or head to Haslemere Museum to listen to the story of The Gruffalo and make your very own wonderful Gruffalo picture to take home with you.
A lovely Trails and Tails session at Gatton Park on Friday will be based around the story of Sugarlump and the Unicorn. Enjoy the story and go for a walk in the park to bring the story to life. Return to create artwork linked to the story. Sessions take place in the morning and the afternoon.
