This October half term, The Lightbox gallery and museum in Woking is offering another fun-filled week of workshops and activities for children to discover how to make sculptures. The week will include a mixture of free drop-in and bookable paid workshops, with the chance to make Sculpture Mobiles, Modroc Sculptures and 3D Faces; and to finish the week, get in the Halloween spirit at a Spooky Family Fun Afternoon.
Sculpture Week will start with a 3D Faces workshop on Tues 24 October from 1.30pm – 3.00pm. Open to ages 4-8 years, this workshop will take card, paint, fabric and other household materials for children to create their own self-portrait 3D Faces. Book in advance to secure a spot in this fun workshop. For children aged 4+, drop-in to the free Sculpture Mobiles workshop on Wed 25 October between 1.30pm – 4.00pm. Taking inspiration from shapes and sculptures, participants will create their own suspended moving mobile using recycled materials.
Thursday 26 October will see everyone delving into Modroc Sculpture, learning how to use a wire frame and plaster bandage to create figurative sculptures. Who will your sculpture look like? This bookable workshop will take place for two age groups: 8-11 years at 1.00pm – 2.30pm, and 12-16 years at 3.00pm – 4.30pm.
Finally, the week will culminate in a Spooky Family Fun Afternoon on Fri 27 October, getting everyone ready for a Halloween spook-fest. Drop-in free from 1.30pm – 4.00pm to see our expert face painters transform little ones’ faces into their favourite ghost, ghoul or monster. Running at the same time, children can also take part in a Cup Ghosts craft workshop, making their own friendly ghost to take home using new and recycled materials.
While visiting The Lightbox during October half term, be sure to stop into the exhibitions on display: in the Main Gallery and across Woking town centre, discover internationally recognised Woking-born artist Sean Henry’s highly realistic human sculptures in Face to Face: The Figurative Sculpture of Sean Henry; and in the Upper Gallery, The Lightbox Photographic Open exhibition will display all the best entries from across the country in this year’s photography competition.
Complete your visit with a trip to the family-friendly Seasons Café and Kitchen, where you can enjoy freshly prepared brunch, lunch, drinks and snacks, made using seasonal produce. Highlights include the Slider Burger Board or Club Sandwich for adults; and fish fingers, sausages or a sandwich box on a special children’s menu.
