Because you matter too
Summer can be wonderful – longer days, family adventures, sunshine (hopefully). But if you’re a mum, it can also mean a lot of juggling: school holidays, endless snacks, day trips, work, and household chaos.
It’s easy to put yourself last. But self-care isn’t selfish – it’s how we recharge so we can show up for everyone else. Even the smallest acts of kindness towards yourself can help you feel more grounded, energised, and less overwhelmed.
Here are 14 simple, realistic summer self-care tips for mums – no spa days required!
1. Start your day with five minutes just for you
Before the chaos kicks in, take five quiet minutes, sip your tea, stretch, breathe. No to-do list. Just you.
2. Go for a solo walk
Even a short stroll around the block with a podcast or your favourite playlist can lift your mood and clear your mind.
3. Look after your skin
Apply sunscreen and a splash of moisturiser every morning – even if you’re staying at home. It’s a little ritual just for you (and future you will thank you for the SPF).
4. Snack like you mean it
Swap crusts and crumbs for food that feels good. Summer fruit, yoghurt, smoothies, iced teas. You deserve proper fuel too.
5. Take a break from scrolling
Unfollow anything that makes you feel “less than.” Fill your feed with people who make you laugh, feel inspired or understood.
6. Make a “just for me” list
Books to read, films to watch, cafes to visit without the kids. Keep it on your phone and tick things off when you get a rare hour to yourself.
7. Read for fun
Whether it’s fiction, romance or just a glossy magazine in the garden, reading is a mini mental holiday.
8. Wind down before bed
Try a warm shower, soft lighting, a gentle stretch or a sleep app. Even 10 minutes can make a difference.
9. Play your own music
Not nursery rhymes or teen playlists – your music. Put on something nostalgic or uplifting while you cook, clean or relax.
10. Say yes to help
If someone offers to watch the kids or drop something off, say yes. Accepting support is part of self-care.
11. Be still in nature
Sit outside with your coffee, lie on a picnic blanket, listen to the birds. A few minutes of stillness does wonders.
12. Do something creative
Try a bit of doodling, baking, gardening or journaling. Anything that’s just for fun, not for a result.
13. Be honest with another mum
A quick message saying “I’m struggling today” can open up real, supportive connection. You’re never the only one.
14. Let go of perfection
You don’t need to create a magical summer every single day. A loving, present (ish) mum is more than enough.
